Traditional Uphutu Recipe

600ml boiled water
3 1/2 cups maize meal
1/2 tsp salt

  1. Pour the boiled water into a large pot.
  2. Add the salt.
  3. Put the maize meal into the pot and mix it into the water using the back of a wooden spoon or a fork.
  4. Let the phutu cook on low heat while stirring frequently.
  5. The phutu is ready when it has formed lumps, and the maize meal is not grainy anymore.
